LATICRETE & Rio Grande Sponsor CTEF Certification Test

Workshop PhotoOn May 14-15, 2009, LATICRETE and Rio Grande Company co-sponsored the CTEF ceramic tile installation certification test, the first of its kind in Colorado. Held at Rio Grande Company’s facility in Denver, twenty LATICRETE MVPs took the certification test over a two day period. With the help of LATICRETE materials, along with tile and backerboard donated by Design Materials Inc., CTEF was well equipped to conduct the hands-on portion of this testing event.

Stephanie Samulski of the CTEF said, “Rio Grande and LATICRETE really stepped up to the plate to make taking the certification test doable for the Denver-area contractors that participated. That was especially appreciated by the contractors, who still had to pull their installers out of the field for two days to test. This helped us get a large group tested, one of the largest to date, and this is critical to making the CTEF certification meaningful. The sooner we identify the best installers out there, the sooner manufacturers and distributors, like LATICRETE and Rio Grande, can start telling customers to use CTEF Certified Tile Installers.”

In my opinion, this NTCA, CTEF certification workshop is beginner-ish and unprofessional. Our industry needs to take a hard look at what these guys are doing. Never ever start any wall tile installation with the bottom row.

You might say that this CTEF test is not a shower area. Well then what is it? I don't recognize it as any area in a residential home where you can install full tiles at the floor. Is there a tub somewhere, is it a powder room, what is it? This whole demonstration doesn't make any sense.

Proper way to start a quality large wall tile installation

What does the T C A Handbook say about the Mapei Installation?

Oh thats right, I forgot, the T C A Handbook tells you anything and everything about installlng tile except the most important part of installing tile and that is:
" How to do it "

On this installation the T C A Handbook has No Opinion.

These installation methods have everything to do with our longevity as a industry, future residential tile jobs, and the livelihood of many, many people ....

And the Tile Manufacturers have No Opinion.

This American manufacture/T C A installation look is reason that American Tile Manufacturers missed the entire residential tile boom. (Tile consumptiom rose anywhere from 5% to 15% every year from the mid 80's until recently.) Every American Tile Company struggled to survive through these years, many went out of business, and hence the consolidation of A.O. and Daltile. Through this period 75% of residentially installed tile was European manufactured.

Compare this T C N A installation to any European Tile Installation Photo and its very easy to see why clients chose european tile. It's not the tile clients like. It's the installation look. Of course, most get the Daltile look anyway, the 800 lb gorilla of the T C A.

Does anyone believe that this is or can be the future of installed residential tile? God help us all.
